If you have never published on Kindle Direct Publishing before, the dashboard can look intimidating. There are tabs, forms, file requirements, pricing decisions, and choices about programs like KDP Select. Here is a clear, step-by-step walkthrough of every decision you need to make.

Before You Start: What You Need

Have these ready before opening KDP:

  • Your exported manuscript file (EPUB or DOCX from WritebookAI)
  • Your book cover (JPEG, minimum 2560 x 1600 pixels, ideally a 1.6:1 ratio)

Step 1: Export Your Manuscript from WritebookAI

Inside WritebookAI, click Export and select EPUB for eBooks — this is the native Kindle format and produces the best reading experience on all Kindle devices and apps. If you prefer to do a final manual read-through in Word before uploading, select DOCX instead.

Step 4: Create Your KDP Account

Go to kdp.amazon.com and sign in with your existing Amazon account. If you do not have one, create a free account.

Under "My Account," complete:

  • Author/Publisher information — your name or pen name
  • Tax information — complete the tax interview. US authors submit a W-9 (provides SSN or EIN). International authors submit a W-8BEN. This takes 10–15 minutes but cannot be skipped — you cannot receive royalties without it.

Step 5: Create Your New Kindle eBook

  • Manuscript upload: Upload your EPUB or DOCX file
  • Cover upload: Upload your prepared cover image
